Latin Roots & Affixes, Lesson 10

Today's lesson will focus on the prefixes in, intra, mal, and super as well as the roots scope, scrib, sen and sequ.

PREFIXES

The prefix in means "not". It is used very often in the English language. For example, it is present in the words, incomplete, incapable and instability.

The prefix intra means "inside" or "within". The prefix is used in the phrase intramural sports, that is, sports played "within the walls" of the college.

The prefix mal means "bad". Perhaps, you recognize the word malfunction.

You have likely seen the prefix super, meaning "above", in words like Superman and superhighway. Maybe you even recognize the psychological term superego.

ROOTS

The root scope means "see" or "watch". Undoubtedly, you know the word telescope.

The root scrib(and its variant script) means "write". Did you know that medical and legal professionals record data in transcripts?

The root sen means "old". No doubt, you have heard the expression senior citizen.

Finally, the root sequ (and its variants secu and sue) means "follow". You may have seen the words sequential and pursue before.
